How to Get Infinite Money in Tears of the Kingdom

In The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, making money is a tad harder than it was in the previous game. Gemstones aren’t worth as much anymore, rupees are harder to come by, and prizes for just about anything are a lot lower than they were in Breath of the Wild. As a result, reaching the money cap can be a right pain.

But did you know there’s a solution? An easy way to max out your rupee counter right at the start of the game?

Yep, here’s how it works…

For those who don’t want to watch it, here are the full instructions:

Tutorial

  1. Complete the Great Sky Island without collecting any materials or armour
  2. Get the Hylian Shield (or alternatively, any shield with a price value)
  3. Speak to a shopkeeper
  4. Say you’ll sell them items
  5. You’ll end up in the shield tab
  6. So just sell them the shield! It won’t disappear from the inventory, so you can just repeat until you’re rich

Yeah, that’s it. The game simply can’t handle you speaking to a shopkeeper with no Materials tab, so lets you sell items from the other tabs instead. And, since said items aren’t meant to be sold… they don’t even vanish from your inventory afterwards.

As as result, you can get over 100,000 rupees in under ten minutes by selecting the Hylian Shield and spamming the A button.

Either way, that’s how to get infinite money in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. It’s incredibly easy to do, and may not even count as a glitch at all.

FAQs

Wait what is this trick?

If you don’t collect materials and try to sell something to a shop, the game will open the last tab you unlocked instead of the Materials menu. You can then ‘sell’ items from that tab an infinite number of times.

That’s it? No glitches required?

Nope. Nintendo just never expected you to beat the Great Sky Island without collecting any materials, so there are no failsafes included for this.

What tab does it open?

The last one you unlocked, with one exception.

What’s the exception?

It won’t go to the Zonai devices tab. So if that’s your latest tab, it’ll go to the one you unlocked before that.

Can’t I change tabs?

Nope. These aren’t meant to be switched between in the shop menu, so you’re stuck on the last tab you unlocked.

Can I really just sell the same item over and over?

Yes! The game has no code to remove a shield or weapon from your inventory, so it just stays there after you sell it. You can keep pressing A while hovering over it to sell it over and over again.

Can I collect armour?

No. The armour tab is normally accessible when selling items, so if you have any armour, it’ll default to that tab instead of the last one unlocked.

Does this only work with the Hylian Shield?

Nope. Any weapon or item with a sale price works, though the Hylian Shield is probably the most effective.

What weapons have a sale price?

This spreadsheet by Echocolat lists all items and their internal prices.

So what other alternatives are there?

The most expensive items you’re not meant to sell (barring the Hylian Shield) are the Great Eagle Bow (worth 120 rupees), the Royal Guard weapons/items (100 rupees each) and the Daybreaker (worth 98 rupees).

But I’m too lazy to get those!

Well, try selling one of the Sheikah weapons instead. The Eightfold Longblade gives you 66 rupees every time it’s ‘sold’, and the Eightfold Blade gives you 28 rupees. You can get one of these in about 30 seconds by using the Sheik amiibo.

Does this work with arrows?

Yep! Which means if you can get a few hundred of them before using this glitch, you can easily get a few hundred rupees every time you sell.

What versions does this work on?

All of them. So yes, it works on version 1.2.1.
