Wow, it sure is a year for franchise revivals, isn’t it?
Indeed, just after Sega announced series like Jet Set Radio and Crazy Taxi were returning, and Nintendo announced a new Star Fox game, it seems another popular 90s franchise is getting a comeback.
Yep, a new Spyro the Dragon game has been announced for all systems, under the name Spyro: A Realm Reborn. Here’s the reveal trailer if you somehow missed it:

As you can see, there’s not much of the game on show here. You’ve got some story and worldbuilding, some footage showing Spyro’s updated character model, and a tiny bit of footage showing him flying through a stage Star Fox style. It’s very much the “this exists” kind of trailer, and nothing more.
But damnn, that doesn’t make it any less exciting here. Most notably, because this is the first major appearance of Spyro in a very long time.
Indeed, with the last major appearance being 2018’s Spyro Reignited Trilogy, and the last proper new game in the series being The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon in 2008, it’s been more than a decade since a new game in the franchise was even a possibility. It really is the comeback story fans have wanted for years, and one which could hopefully make Spyro a household name on par with Crash Bandicoot again.
And it’s in good hands too. Indeed, with Toys For Bob returning as the developer, it’s clear that the lessons learnt from the Spyro Reignited Trilogy are likely going to be applied here too. Add this to their experience with other 3D platformers stemming from the Crash N. Sane Trilogy and Its About Time in general, and well, you’ve got the perfect team for a Spyro return too.
So, Spyro is returning in 2027, and the perfect development team for the job is behind it all. Tell us your thoughts on this comeback in the comments below, or on our Discord server today!
