Doom Creative Director Hugo Martin: NO MTX in Doom Eternal, and In Game XP is Purely for Cosmetics

As mentioned on a reply in a Doom 2016/Doom Eternal fanclub on Facebook. In his own words:

There is no store. Nothing u can unlock in Eternal with XP has anything to do with player abilities or content that would impact your game in anyway. The only thing u can unlock with XP is COSMETICS. These cosmetics have no impact on how u play, they just look cool.

Eternal is a $60 game, not a free to play game or mobile game – we are giving u a complete experience with no store just like you’d expect. Unlocking skins with XP is a part of the experience if you care about that stuff, or u can completely ignore it and it will have no impact on your experience AT ALL and it’s all free.

In other words, there are no micotransactions or lootboxes, and the in game XP system (which is already entirely free in of itself) is used for nothing more than cosmetic extras. It’s a great thing to hear in regards to a game like this, and something we really applaud both Martin and Id Software for in general.

But at the same time, it also makes us deeply depressed about the situation the modern gaming world has found itself in too. Somehow in 2020, the idea of a game that you can just buy once and get the most of has become a rarity. Somehow, getting a finished product without exploitative lootboxes and microtransactions is newsworthy enough that people are writing articles about it, and giving them thousands of upvotes on Reddit.

That’s the gaming landscape we’re in now. A world where paying once and getting a finished product is what’s unusual, not the other way around. It would sound utterly obscene to someone from the NES/SNES/PS1 era and likely to many people even a few generations ago too.

Still, guess that’s life now. Every product and service in the world is now a ‘service’ that seems to be designed to suck out as much money as possible as quickly as it can, quality be damned. Every opportunity for monetisaiton is taken, regardless of its effects on society or a company’s customers.

Regardless, what do you think? Are you happy to see Doom Eternal won’t be going down the microtransactions and lootboxes route? Do you think other games should go back to their roots and do the same thing?
