The Gacha Mechanics Are Being Removed from Mario Kart Tour!

When it comes to Mario Kart Tour, one of the most hated aspects is the whole ‘gacha’ aspect of the game. This system lets you get random characters and items by spending in game currency or real money, via a pipe that you can access from the main menu.

It’s basically a Mario themed lootbox system, and one that contributed to the game being banned in various regions.

Yet it seems like this aspect of the game may be going away soon. Why? Because according to the official Mario Kart Tour Twitter account, the pipes you can fire by using rubies will be removed, and replaced with a ‘Spotlight Shop’ where you can buy drivers, karts and gliders outright!

Here’s the tweet about it online:

It’s a pretty interesting change, and one we’d never expect for a mobile game. Like, removing monetisation? Is this really something Nintendo is doing? As in, that Nintendo responsible for the dodgy Nintendo Switch Online Expansio Pack or constant updates for half finished multiplayer Switch games?

Eh, it seems so. Maybe they’re confident that people buying in game currency will be enough here. Or think Tour will be better off as a free way to advertise their actual paid games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, especially now the Booster Course Pass is a thing.

Regardless, what do you think? Are you happy to see the gacha mechanics removed here? How do you think the removal of this functionality will affect Mario Kart Tour as a whole?

  1. CM30, what happened in here? You were just jerking around and… And you messed up the word “expansion”! Yes! You should feel so badly. You did mean to mess up the word “expansion”.
