Rayman Legends Retold Revealed

It’s been an open secret among the community for a while now, but it’s now official. Rayman Legends is getting a remake, and it’s under the name Rayman Legends Retold.

This version of the game is much the same as the original mechanics wise, but redoes the graphics in a new art style, adds some more story content and levels and comes bundled in with an updated version of Rayman Origins. Here’s the reveal trailer from that recent State of Play presentation:

As you can see, it does look good. Yeah, the graphics aren’t the same as the hand-drawn ones in the original game, but they do work here, and do a wonderful job of bringing 3D visuals into a 2D Rayman platformer.

But we have to partly wonder why. Why Ubisoft chose this game of all things to remake here?

Because here’s the thing with Rayman Legends. It’s a perfectly fine game.

The art style holds up well, even to this day. Mechanically there aren’t really any real complaints about it, bar maybe the Murphy levels being annoying in some versions. And heck, it’s not like the game’s hard to come by either. It’s available to purchase on Steam to this very day, and just as easy to access on home consoles too.

So, we still have to wonder why this is even a thing. Why take a perfectly good game and remake it in a perfectly fine way?

It’s like the Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story remake to some degree. Both the original game and remake are great in their own right, but the latter feels somewhat redundant given the original can be played on the exact same systems.

Regardless, Rayman Legends Retold is releasing for PC, Switch 2, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, and will be available on October 1st this year. Buy it if you’re a fan of the series, and want a new game in the franchise.
