A few weeks ago, we got the latest trailer for Professor Layton and the New World of Steam. This featured in the big Direct last Wednesday, and confirmed the game would be released worldwide on December 10th 2026.
But it seems like that’s not the only Professor Layton game on the horizon. No, a remake of the original title (Professor Layton and the Curious Village) was announced at Level-5’s Vision event too:
This game has an unspecified 2027 release date, and will launch on Switch 1, 2, PS5 and Steam.
However, the internet reaction to this announcement is surprisingly mixed here.
On the one hand, it’s a very convenient re-release for the game. The original title is only available on DS or mobile at the moment, meaning your only choices are to either hunt down a DS/3DS, or to play it on a smartphone.
As a result, the ability to actually play Curious Village on other systems is a bit of a godsend here. It means Switch 1 and 2 owners will have a much more convenient way to experience the title, while PlayStation 5 and PC gamers will have a way to access it for the first time.
At the same time though, the style has left a lot of fans rather cold here. Since well, the mix of 3D character models and 2D backdrops just doesn’t look as good as the original title.
It’s in line with the 3DS titles and spinoffs, but an overall step down in the charm department as a result.
And then there’s the AI. Put simply, Level-5 loves AI now.
Like, really loves it. Their later games are absolutely full of it, and the presentation this remake was announced in was chock full of the stuff. Heck, even their CEO went on record saying the technology shouldn’t be demonised, and that between 80-90% of their programming was done using AI tools now.
Add this to obvious signs of AI usage in the remake’s visuals (windows are inconsistent, textures feel random, etc), and it seems like generative AI will play quite a big role in this game too.

So, it’s a tough one for many people. Do you want to be able to play a childhood classic on a device that isn’t nearly a decade old? Or would you rather avoid supporting Level-5’s AI endeavours, even if it means losing out on a much needed title?
Honestly, only you can make that decision.
