Nintendo Announces Star Fox for Switch 2

Nintendo Announces Star Fox for Switch 2

Well, this is all rather sudden, is it? Indeed, late yesterday evening, Nintendo suddenly announced that a new Star Fox game was in development for the Switch 2, and that a Nintendo Direct for it would be going live in a matter of minutes.

Here’s the Direct itself with more info on the game:

Yeah, as you can see, calling it ‘new’ might not be entirely accurate here. Just like Star Fox 64 and Star Fox Zero before it, this Star Fox game is another reimagining of the original title, with the level and boss concepts taking heavy inspiration from the Nintendo 64 game in particular.

But there are plenty of interesting things to note here nonetheless.

First, as you can probably tell from the footage, this looks and sounds a lot better than any Star Fox game before it, and pushes Nintendo’s latest console to its limits in terms of tech. So, if you want to know what a Star Fox game in full HD with the Switch 2’s capabilities in mind would be like, this is it.

And it’s also very heavily inspired by the artwork for the original SNES game too. Indeed, while Fox and co look a bit different from how they appeared in the Mario Galaxy Movie or Super Smash Bros series, they look spot on in comparison to the SNES version’s box art or other marketing materials.

Hence while it’s a different set of designs for sure, they’re ones we’re pretty happily to see here, and ones we’re sure everyone will get used to in good time.

Meanwhile, the game also goes out of its way to characterise the Star Fox crew and expand on their personalities and backstories too. Now, you’ve got cutscenes before various missions showing them on the Great Fox talking with General Pepper, and glimpses into past events like the downfall of the original Star Fox team.

As for new features?

Well, it’s about what you’d expect from a modern Nintendo title. Mouse mode is supported for aiming, as you’d probably imagined it’d be. There’s an expanded multiplayer mode where players take control of either Team Star Fox or Team Star Wolf and battle over various objectives. Plus, there’s even GameChat AR integration where you’ll appear as your favourite Star Fox character when talking while playing the game.

Add this to various challenges to complete in prior levels, difficulty modes that change up the experience and some modified mission and level layouts, and there’s definitely enough here to make it seem like the definitive version of the classic Star Fox formula.

What’s more, it’s also not exactly a far future release either. No, the game’s set to launch on June 25th 2026, just over a month from now. That’s quite the shock reveal if we do say so ourselves, and indicates that Nintendo is very willing to hold off on announcing games until the last possible moment.

Either way, that’s the latest from the Star Fox series, and everything the title has in store. It’ll be out on June 25th for $50 digital ($60 on cart), and offer a modernised version of the adventure fans have grown used to in titles like Star Fox and Lylat Wars.

So, what do you think of it? Are you excited to see the return of the series? Or would you have preferred a brand-new game with its own storyline and setup?
