Well folks, it seems the rumours were true. Metroid Ravenous is indeed the next game in the 2D Metroid series, and it’s launching on Switch 2 on the 28th of January 2027.
Here’s the trailer if you haven’t seen it already:
Yeah, it’s pretty obvious who made the game and what it’s a sequel to. The whole formula just screams Metroid Dread, and you can see evidence of it being MercurySteam’s work everywhere.
But given the amazing quality of Metroid Dread (and their previous work on Samus Returns), that’s certainly no negative here. Oh no, these guys revitalised 2D Metroid with those games, and it looks like the pattern’s only going to continue with this one.
So, what’s the story here? What’s the deal with this adventure?
Well, from the looks of the trailer, something which has to do with those mysterious cloaked robot-like figures Samus is seen battling on the surface, that’s what. Apparently, she gets knocked down into the caverns beneath this moon during said fight, and has to find a way to escape while blasting through everything and everyone in her way. It’s all fairly standard Metroid stuff really.
What is less standard though is why the game is called ‘ravenous’. Put simply, she can eat or absorb parts of her enemies to survive.
And that appears to be the main mechanic the game is built around here. We’re sure not how it works, or whether it’s used to gain abilities ala Kirby or Mega Man, but it’s an interesting change of pace nonetheless.
Still, that’s our first glimpse at Metroid Ravenous, and the future of the 2D Metroid series. There’s still a lot to learn about how it works, and the game definitely has some interesting secrets Nintendo isn’t telling us about (yes, we can see all the Chozo lore and backstory references too).
But for now, all we can do is wait and see what this new instalment is all about.
