Mario Movie Concepts Reveal Cut Characters

Mario Movie Concepts Reveal Cut Characters

As anyone who’s seen it knows all too well, the Super Mario Bros Movie loves its cameos and references. Whether it’s Foreman Spike’s return in the opening in Brooklyn, Swanky Kong making a cameo in the Jungle Kingdom driving scene or King Boo and King Bob-omb being among the guests at Bowser’s wedding, the movie is filled to the brim with unexpected callbacks and references.

But did you know it might have gotten even crazier? That Bowser’s wedding might not have just had King Boo in it, but Wart and Rawk Hawk as well?

Yep, as found by folks online, some storyboards for the movie had gone online, courtesy of artist Douglas Lovelace. And well, they show some interesting concepts to say the least.

Yeah, you’ve got Rawk Hawk, the Whomp King, Wart and Mouser among the guests at the wedding. Given that Super Mario Bros 2 references were virtually non-existent in this film, and Paper Mario references were much more subtle, that’s quite the shock to say the least.

And it makes us wonder something. Most notably, is this hinting towards content from the Mario RPGs playing a more prominent role in future films?

Because from what we’ve seen, the Mario movies tend to reuse cut concepts in future films. Wart and Mouser may not have made the cut for the first movie, but they became way more prominent in the Super Mario Galaxy Movie, with the former even having voice lines to boot!

Meanwhile references to the Mario RPGs have gotten a tad more noticeable in the same movie. For example, Rosalina’s library has the storybook from Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, the Dark Prognosticus from Super Paper Mario and a book with the Wattanist symbol from Mario & Luigi: Brothership to name just a few, while songs from Super Mario RPG do appear elsewhere in the film.

Hence Paper Mario content could well be a prominent part of a future instalment. Nothing seems to preclude Rawk Hawk (or Flavio, Goombella or any other TTYD character) from making a cameo appearance at a later date.

Still, that’s how Rawk Hawk, Mouser and Wart nearly appeared in the original Super Mario Bros Movie. So, what do you think? Would you have liked to see them there? What are the chances of other characters from the Mario RPGs making cameo appearances in future sequels?
