Is a Metroid Movie in the Works?

Is a Metroid Movie in the Works?

In the last few years, video game movies have only gone from strength to strength. Both the Mario and Sonic series have had huge film series based on them, with the former being some of the highest earning movies of all time and the latter being seen as genuine classics. The Minecraft and Five Nights at Freddy’s movies have seen a huge level of success, with the former rivalling Mario in terms of box office sales. And well, with everything from Bloodborne to Elden Ring to even Call of Duty getting movies based on them, it’s clear the video game movie gold rush is well underway. Every big series will get a movie at some point, and that’s that.

With Nintendo’s lineup of franchises seemingly being the next example. Indeed, right on the heels of the Super Mario Galaxy Movie and a few months prior to the Legend of Zelda one, it’s been reported that a Metroid film is in the planning stages too. Apparently, Nintendo are pitching a film based on it at the moment, with both Sony and Universal fighting for the rights.

Here’s the original tweet about it from Global Box Office on Twitter:

Yeah, it’s only a ‘rumour’ at the moment. Apparently, this V Scooper person is a known source for film leaks, with some credibility to their name, and sites like Nintendo Life and My Nintendo News are trusting them because of that. No-one at Nintendo itself has come out to confirm such a film is in production, nor will they likely do so for a while.

Regardless, the leaks aren’t exactly implausible here. After all, Nintendo wants their franchises represented in other forms of media, and have already given the okay for movie and theme park adaptations as is. Add this to lesser-known Nintendo characters and franchises getting an unexpected spotlight (like ROB and Fox McCloud in the Super Mario Galaxy Movie), and well, a Metroid film isn’t exactly an unrealistic concept now.

Who expected to see this anyway?

That said, a Metroid movie does have one challenge that other franchises don’t. One story writing issue that might make it tough to adapt into a mass-market movie.

Metroid doesn’t really have a lot of characters. Or at least, a lot of friendly, sentient characters that Samus talks to on her adventure.

Instead, it’s a solo journey through a world abandoned by civilisation for thousands or even millions of years. The planets Samus arrives on don’t usually have people living there anymore, or any form of society left standing. With the exception of a few Galactic Federation marines in certain titles and a few precursor shots in the ending cutscenes, she’s on her own against the world and everything in it.

So, we’re interested to see exactly how they’d even adapt it here. When your most iconic characters are villains that want Samus dead, and your most talkative NPCs are utterly despised by the fanbase, you’re in a pretty tough situation as far as script writing goes.

Given this was the last attempt to expand the Metroid supporting cast, it might be best to skip that idea for a film

Still, those are the rumours of a Metroid movie and how various studios are fighting to make it. But what do you think? Are you excited for the possibility? Or do you think this series might be a tough one to adapt into a film?
