Wow, the timing on this news sure is crazy, isn’t it?
Indeed, as reported by Insider Gaming, Nintendo and Ubisoft were once working on a Zelda spinoff starring everyone’s favourite demon king. Apparently, Ubisoft pitched the project as a Zelda game with a new protagonist under the codename ‘Project Goliath’, but Nintendo thought it’d work better with Ganondorf as the main character instead.
This was a project from the Ubisoft Milan team (who previously worked on the Mario + Rabbids games), and it was eventually cancelled in November 2023 for unknown reasons.
Interesting, it also turns out that other Nintendo and Ubisoft collaborations were in the works prior to their relationship breaking down, including a Star Fox game and another Mario spinoff.
So, yeah. At one point a Ganondorf game from the Mario + Rabbids team was a real possibility, and other Nintendo collaborations could have been a thing after that.
Alas, the project fell through, so unless Nintendo or another company rebooted it themselves, it’s unlikely this rumoured game will ever see the light of day. That said, it was does make us wonder something. Or heck, wonder a few things really.
Were those old Nintendo leaks based on these cancelled project proposals?
Because prior to today’s reveal, there was also a ‘leak’ from Nash Weedle about a Ganondorf game too. This one would apparently be in the Echoes of Wisdom engine, and would be a game where Ganon explored his origins.
So, was that this cancelled project? Is it possible that after Nintendo turned down Ubisoft’s pitch, they could have asked Grezzo to make such a game instead?
Eh, it feels somewhat unlikely. But now we have confirmation that some sort of Ganondorf based project was in the works, it does seem a bit less ridiculous than before. It wouldn’t be the first time Nintendo took a project from one team and gave it to another one after all…
