For more than 30 years, BioWare has been a huge name in the video game industry. Responsible for such franchises as Baldur’s Gate, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Mass Effect, the company has become famous for their story-telling and character work.
However, it seems the company has now reached the end of the line. Why? Because earlier today, BioWare confirmed they were shutting down. Here’s their announcement about it from their official Twitter account:

Yeah, it’s a tragic end for a beloved studio, especially one with such a long and storied legacy. And given they were developing Mass Effect: Universe at the time, a fatal blow for what could have been a great game too:

Unfortunately, as bad as the situation may be, it’s not all too surprising given their current owner.
Since well, EA has a bad tendency to shut down the video game developers they acquire. Here’s a list of studios killed by EA, courtesy of The Hidden One on Twitter:
Here is just a FEW notable studios EA have shut down over the years.

Yeah, it’s quite the list, isn’t it? They’re basically the Grim Reaper of the games industry. The studio that inevitably kills every company they buy.
So, the writing was on the wall for a while here. Ever since they purchased BioWare in 2007, the clock was ticking for the latter’s untimely demise.
Regardless, it’s a sad end for such a beloved studio, and a fate that’s becoming all too common in the modern games industry as a whole. Here’s hoping all affected staff find new jobs soon.
