The Mystery of Plumber’s Cave

The Mystery of Plumber’s Cave

From around 2010 to the mid-2020s, the Wario Land: Shake It page on The Cutting Room Floor Wiki had an interesting music track included among its contents. This was apparently a song for an unused level called ‘Plumber’s Cave’, and was supposedly found on the Japanese official website prior to the game’s launch in 2008.

This caught our interest pretty quickly, leading to us uploading the track to our YouTube channel shortly afterwards:

Unfortunately, something didn’t quite add up here. Why?

Because despite everyone’s best efforts, evidence of this song in the files or official marketing material was nowhere to be found.

It wasn’t on the disc, or in any official soundtracks for the game. It wasn’t on the official site, even when viewed via the Wayback Machine. Heck, even the game’s composer (Tomoya Tomita) denied ever creating the song in the past:

And this got us wondering. Where exactly did the tune originate? Was it really some sort of official lost media?

Well, as it turns out, no. Plumber’s Cave is not an unused Wario Land: Shake It song. Heck, it didn’t even have anything to do with the game at all.

Instead, it’s a Super Mario Bros Underground Theme remix by an individual Newgrounds contributor. named PrototypeRaptor. Here’s the original upload from 2008:

Yeah, some rando online thought they could troll the community by taking a fan-made song and passing it off as official. It’s another wiki hoax, along the lines of these ones on Wikipedia.

What’s more, it’s got quite an interesting history too. It’s used in a Team Fortress 2 mod simply called Mario Kart:

Plus, it’s been uploaded on YouTube by a random individual called SilverRain:

As well as used in the popular fan series SMG4. No, we don’t know which episode exactly. Just that half the comments on the YouTube upload are from viewers happy they finally found the song.

So, mystery solved. The song’s a popular SMB 1 remix, and someone on TCRF thought it’d be interesting to troll the community by pretending it was official.

However, it’s worth noting what this situation teaches us. Since well, it’s something that a lot of people need to remember about sites like TCRF.

You shouldn’t take these sites at their word without doing further research. Because like any wiki online, you can never be 100% sure that the people editing the site are contributing in good faith.

So, don’t just copy a bunch of information from the site and call it a day. Don’t just create a video about unused content in Wario Land: Shake It and read the wiki page verbatim.

Do your own research first. Ask the datamining and modding communities for the game in question whether an unused graphic or song really exists in the files. Look into the tools needed to examine unused variables and text strings to figure out whether the info really is in game. Follow all the source links on these pages, and ask yourself if they’re from credible individuals or publications.

Because otherwise, you might fall for a fake song like Plumber’s Cave.

Either way, what do you think about the situation? Did you come across this ‘unused’ song before? What other interesting hoaxes have you encountered in the gaming community?
