Well folks, it seems like another game has been updated. This time, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom has been updated to version 1.0.2, with various changes being listed in said version. Here’s the official changelog in full:
- Fixed an issue where an invisible wall at the entrance to Goron City would impede progress during a Main Quest at Eldin Volcano.
- Fixed an issue at a particular location where the player could target empty space, then bind to that target and pull in a way that would impede progress.
- Fixed various issues to create a smoother gaming experience.
As you can tell, it’s a pretty short list of changes, and one that’s topped off by everyone’s favourite sentence:
Fixed various issues to create a smoother gaming experience.
Unfortunately, these issues are ones that probably shouldn’t have been fixed at all. Why? Because while the first two items listed are very real issues that people ran into on launch day, and most of the minor stuff involves minor tweaks to the final boss fight and ending…
They also fixed everyone’s favourite speedrun glitch too: Menu Storage.
Yeah, the usual trick to play as Link and skip right to the final dungeon is gone in the latest update.
And it’s clear Nintendo and Grezzo really wanted it gone too. Why? Because instead of just fixing a typo or some other minor element of the game like you might expect here, they wrote an entire new event flow for this particular situation.
Here’s a picture of the new setup as compared to the old one, thanks to Echocolat on Discord:
As you can see, the setup is entirely different here. Whereas the former one just voided Zelda out, now the later one tries its hardest to clear every flag possible too.
This means that not only is the signpost method of doing the glitch now fixed, but so is every other method as well. The entirety of Map Storage, Menu Storage, Wrong Warping, etc is now just gone.
And it honestly makes us wonder… why? Why even bother patching things like this?
Because these aren’t glitches you can encounter by accident. No one is getting the timing right for a wrong warp without knowing what they’re doing. It’s virtually frame perfect, and involves a setup that requires you to go well out of your way to pull off.
So, there’s no real reason to fix it at all. Casual players will never encounter the ‘issue’, and speedrunners will just hate you for making their life more difficult for no apparent reason. No one wins here.
Regardless, that’s the latest update for Echoes of Wisdom. It fixes two actually annoying glitches, and one piece of speedrun tech that the entire community depends on. We’d personally advise not updating to it given how minor the changes are, but it’s out there to watch out for the nonetheless.
