Well folks, it seems like another GameCube fan-favourite is now available on the Nintendo GameCube Classics app on Switch 2. This time, it’s Wario’s 3D debut Wario World, made by Treasure and originally released back in 2003. Here’s the trailer for the game:

Yeah, it’s quite the dramatic release trailer for a game like this, isn’t it? Indeed, with Wario World often being known for more jazzy songs like Greenhorn Ruins, we’re surprised they went this direction for the re-release.
But hey, it certainly gets you in the mood to try it out, that’s for sure. And well, it’s quite the interesting game to try too.
You see, Wario World isn’t your typical 3D platformer. At least not in many ways.
No, it’s a much more combat focused affair than something like Super Mario Sunshine. Enemies come in hordes in every level, and the minimal platforming and exploration is mostly done as a way to navigate a route past these foes to the boss. These bosses are huge, horrifying monstrosities with designs straight out of your nightmares and offer some surprisingly exciting battles to boot.

In a sense, I’d probably compare much of the game to a 3D version of Cuphead or a beat em up. The platforming is there and accounted for, but the combat and bosses are the main appeal here.
It’s also not the longest game in the world either. Indeed, with a ‘How Long To Beat’ average of about 6 hours for the main story (and 8 for completionists), it’s a very short adventure by GameCube standards, in a similar vein to the original Luigi’s Mansion.
Still, now it’s on Switch Online (and hence free for Expansion Pack members), that’s a lot less of a concern than it used to be. It’s now just a fun game you can experience for free, without worries that you’re spending 40 bucks on an afternoon’s worth of gameplay.
So, yeah, definitely check it out if you can. It’s well worth it for anyone who enjoyed the Wario Land games before it, or who want a quick bite sized platformer to chill out with after the likes of Super Mario Sunshine and Donkey Kong Bananza.
