The Nintendo Switch Has Now Outsold the NES Worldwide
In their quarterly financial reports today, Nintendo has provided new sales figures for the Switch console, as well as its games. In said figures, they report that 68.30 million Switches have shipped worldwide, handily placing it above the NES in the list of best selling consoles of all time.
It’s an impressive total, especially for a console that only launched 3 years ago. Add this to how much more competition it had than the NES (which launched in an empty market in America) and well, it just shows well the Switch is doing overall.
However, there’s still quite a way to go before the Switch becomes Nintendo’s best selling console. After all, their best selling systems are as follows:
- Nintendo DS: 154.02 million sold
- Game Boy: 118.69 million systems sold
- Wii: 101.63 million systems sold
- GBA: 81.51 million systems sold
- Nintendo 3DS: 75.94 million systems sold
With the DS being such a good seller that it makes just about anything else Nintendo has ever made look obscure by comparison. In fact, almost all their handhelds are like that, with the worst selling one (the 3DS) still managing to outdo every one of their home consoles except the Wii.
Hence while the Switch has done well, it’s not top of the heap just yet. It’s still got a huge mountain to climb here, and needs to basically double its sales to get anywhere close.
Still, that could happen eventually. The Switch is pretty new after all, and (according to Nintendo) it’s got quite a long way to go before they’ll even consider a replacement for it so.
So if the good games keep coming and the momentum doesn’t slow down, who knows? Maybe we could indeed seeing the Switch outsell the Wii or DS in a few years.
But what do you think about this? Are you happy to see the Nintendo Switch do so well? How many units will it have sold by the time the next Nintendo console comes around?
