Back in 2021, the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was decompiled. This meant the source code for the game was now available online, making things like more detailed mods and a native PC port actually possible.
Yet Ocarina of Time isn’t the only Zelda game to get this treatment. Oh no, as the existence of the ZeldaRET project indicates, just about every game in the series is getting decompiled in the same way. These include Majora’s Mask, The Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, and the topic of today’s article, The Minish Cap.
And it’s the latter that’s the most interesting. Why? Because unlike the other games’ (whose decompilation efforts are between 10 and 90% complete), The Minish Cap has now been completely decompiled. That means its code is now completely understood, and can easily be modified for things like mods and PC ports.
Here’s the page about it on the site with more info on the matter:

Plus, the associated Git repository with the code in question:

It’s an impressive project to say the least, and shows an admirable amount of love for this underrated title.
But it’s what happens in the future that really has us excited. Why? Because here’s the thing; Minish Cap mods are not exactly the most common thing in the world.
Oh sure, they exist. Minish Maker is a whole suite of ROM hacking tools for folks looking to make their own Minish Cap hacks, and they do have active Discord and Twitch communities…
Yet none have really broken through into the mainstream in the way other video game hacks have. There are no Super Mario Star Road or Last Impact equivalents, no Indigo equivalent or Newer Super Mario Bros Wii equivalent…
There’s nothing that’s really caught the internet by storm yet.
So hopefully, the existence of a finished decomp will fix this. It’ll provide a way to make better mods for the game than ever before, and potentially let them run it on PC at some point as well.
Either way, what do you think? Are you happy to see that The Minish Cap has now been fully decompiled? What awesome mods and hacks are there for the game so far? Are there any interesting projects starting up now the code is out there in the wild?
