The First Super Mario Galaxy Movie Trailer is Here!

The First Super Mario Galaxy Movie Trailer is Here!

Well folks, it’s here. The first trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has been shared by Nintendo in today’s Nintendo Direct, and gives plenty of details about the film and its storyline.

Here’s the video if you haven’t seen it yourself:

As you can see, there’s a lot to unpack here. You’ve got Bowser being tiny and painting funny pictures of himself and Peach, in a way that follows on from the first movie. You’ve got the return of Bowser Jr, who’s now planning to save his dad and conquer the universe. There’s Rosalina reading a storybook about the events of the previous film to an audience of Lumas in the Comet Observatory.

Heck, you’ve even got Megaleg’s return, complete with voice acting! Damn, we never though that robot would ever say anything, that’s for sure.

That said, there are a few questions we have to ask here. Namely, what exactly is the plot here? How exactly does Bowser Jr hope to rule the universe?

Because the first movie laid things out a bit more clearly. Bowser wanted the power of the stars to conquer the Mushroom Kingdom and marry Peach, and the first trailer made the former point extremely clear.

This one feels a bit disjointed by comparison. You’ve got amazing scenes that will be incredible in the actual movie, but not much in the way of how they actually fit together story wise.

Regardless, the Direct itself gave a few other neat things away:

Like arguably the most ‘personality’ we’ve seen in a Direct in years.

Since well, not only did Shigeru Miyamoto and Chris Meledandri appear in a presenting role with a genuine passion for the project, but Jack Black showed up and joked around too. Racing into the scene on a scooter and announcing the actor playing his in-story son, he quickly took over with comments about how amazing Super Mario Galaxy was as a game and how big of a deal it was for his kids.

This scene made us smile quite a bit

Yeah, it was a bit weird and awkward. Yeah, some people might consider it a tad cringey.

But you know what? I just consider it fun. The kind of goofing around we used to see with Reggie and Iwata in the olden days before the company went all clinical and get things as boring as possible. Nintendo needs more of this in their online marketing, and we’re glad it’s here in the movie Direct at least.

As for the actual actors? We’re kinda mixed on them.

On the one hand, we don’t notice anything off about Brie Larson as Rosalina, and she seems to be doing a good job with the role. She sounds like the character usually does here.

At the same time though, Benny Safdie feels a bit off as Bowser Jr. He’s not a bad actor by any means, and we’re sure he’s played a lot of amazing roles in the past.

But his Bowser Jr just seems a bit… old for the role he plays in the movie. He sounds like an adult failing to pull off a kid’s voice, and it kinda takes us out of it a bit.

Ah well, maybe we’ll get used to that one. Chris Pratt seemed like a poor choice for Mario in the original movie too, but he didn’t bother us in the film itself, and we feel he did a decent job with the role all things considered.

So, perhaps the Mario Galaxy Movie will make Bowser Jr work well too.

Regardless, that’s the first big trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. What are your thoughts about it? Are you excited to check it out when it releases next year?
