Super Mario Galaxy Movie Announced

Super Mario Galaxy Movie Announced

When Nintendo announced that a sequel to The Super Mario Bros Movie was in the works, most people expected it to be based on the older games in the series. Super Mario World was the main choice given the post-credits sequence had a Yoshi hatching in the first movie, but other games like Super Mario Bros 2, 3 and 64 were on the table too, along with other spinoffs from the same era.

Now though, it seems that’s far from the case. Why? Because in the Nintendo Direct yesterday, Nintendo and Illumination announced that the next movie would be The Super Mario Galaxy movie, with influence from the 2007 Wii game being apparent from the get go.

Here’s the announcement from their official channel:

As you can tell, we don’t see much of it here. We’ve got a beautiful clip of the camera panning across the Mushroom Kingdom, with Monty Moles and Cheep Cheeps getting the spotlight, a pan up to space with the title, and some tunes from Super Mario World and Super Mario Galaxy to set the scene. It’s as basic an introduction as you could get, and one that does little more than confirm it’s another Mario movie.

But dear god does it makes us excited nonetheless. After all, the Super Mario Galaxy games are incredible titles with amazing visuals and music (especially for their time), and the idea of a new movie focusing on them just feels like a crazy dream come true. It may not be the movie we’d expect to see, but it’s damn well the movie we secretly wanted to see, and one we’re glad is indeed becoming a reality.

And given that every element that worked so well in the original is present and accounted for here (like the cast list, composer, art style, etc), well there’s no danger it’ll turn out terrible either. It’ll be another fun Mario flick with all the trimmings, and it’ll make money hand over fist because of that.

So yeah, the next Mario movie is Super Mario Galaxy themed. It’s not what anyone expected in the slightest, but it’s exactly what the film series needed, and something we’ll be excited to watch day 1.
