Well folks, it’s finally here! Yep, as per the title, we now have a Super Mario Bros Wonder themed Nintendo Direct lined up for the 31st of August this year, complete with even more info about the upcoming title.
Here’s the announcement about it from Nintendo UK on Twitter:

With the most interesting part being the amount of content included in the presentation. Indeed, with the video clocking in at around 15 minutes, this seems to be the kind of look at the game previously afforded to titles like Super Smash Bros Ultimate and the Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, complete with all manner of info regarding things like characters, mechanics and other content.
But what exactly does that entail? What sort of important details could Nintendo potentially include in this Direct?
Well, there’s obviously the main elephant in the room here. No, not the one Mario turns into via a powerup (though he’ll probably also be present in some form). The other elephant in the room.
Aka Charles Martinet’s retirement as the voice of Mario and Luigi.
Because there are a lot of questions the change raises here. Like, why now? Why did Martinet (who’s previously stated he had no interest in resigning) decided to step down from the role now?
And who exactly will be replacing him anyway? Are they someone we might recognise, or a new face entirely?
Both these questions and more are things the Direct will likely try to answer. So that’s one thing we’ll likely hear more about here.
With the other main one being more info about the main mechanic of the game. Namely, the whole ‘Wonder Seed’ mechanic.
Since while we know some of the things it does, there are still dozens of interesting questions related to how it works on a practical level. Does every single level have its own unique effect when this is collected? Are the effects semi randomised across multiple levels?
And what’s the story behind it in universe anyway? The Mushroom Kingdom may have always been a wacky place, but this is on another level, with part of the craziness likely coming from the new Flower Kingdom setting the game has.
Add this to various other things that could be explained here (new powerups like Elephant Mario, Bowser’s role in the story, the purpose of the caterpillar character in the official artwork and the abilities of the additional characters you can play as), and you’ve certainly got enough stuff for a detailed Nintendo Direct. Or several.
Still, that’s all speculation as of now, since all we really know is that a Direct for the game is coming at 3pm this Thursday, and that it’ll be dedicated to Super Mario Bros Wonder. So, check out the time it airs in your region in the table below:
