Sonic the Hedgehog Is Getting a 4th Movie

Sonic the Hedgehog Is Getting a 4th Movie

Ever since the first film was released in 2020, the Sonic film series has only gone from strength to strength. With every film adding new fan favourites to the mix, and storylines from the actual games getting adapted more and more as they go, it’s become a media franchise on par with the original games, and the most successful video game adaptation of all time to boot.

And it seems the good times are only going to keep coming. Why? Because earlier today, Variety reported that Paramount had already greenlit a 4th film for the series. Here’s the original article if you haven’t seen it already.

It’s an obvious move for a series this successful (and one which was basically confirmed by the post credits scene in the third movie), but it still leaves a few questions unanswered nonetheless.

Firstly, what game will they decide to adapt here? Sonic 3 was loosely inspired by Sonic Adventure 2, with characters like Shadow, Maria and Gerald Robotnik appearing in similar roles to that game. So how will the 4th movie follow up on that?

Will it take inspiration from Sonic Unleashed or Sonic Generations, other fan favourites in the 3D Sonic series? Will it somehow take notes from Frontiers, including its new setting and true antagonist? Include elements from Sonic Mania or Sonic Superstars?

Honestly, everything is on the table right now. Hence we’re very excited to see what route they’ll take the story this time around.

We’re also interested in how they’ll handle Robotnik too. Cause you see, while Jim Carrey returned from retirement for Sonic 3…

It feels like that might not be the case for every movie released in future. He loves the role and the series, but we’re not sure it’ll singlehandedly keep him out of retirement for years to come.

So, we’re curious how they’ll work around that. Will Carrey just come back again and again due to his love of the character and role? Will they try and recast Robotnik in some way, leaving the replacement stuck in his shadow? Will they try to find a new villain, perhaps one of the other one-off antagonists from the series?

Honestly, we’re not sure. But whatever happens, Carrey’s Robotnik is an iconic villain, and one any newcomer has a lot to live up to.

Regardless, a fourth Sonic film is now confirmed, and planned for a 2027 release. So, what do you think it’ll be like? What Sonic elements could get adapted here? Will Jim Carrey return as Robotnik for the 4th time in a row?
