So, What is Emio Anyway?

When it comes to Nintendo franchises, there are a few obvious genres that tend to come to mind. There are 2D and 3D platformers, like the Mario, Donkey Kong, Kirby and Wario Land franchises. There are action-adventure games of various types, like The Legend of Zelda, Metroid and Kid Icarus.

And there are a fair few racing games too, with the Mario Kart and F-Zero series being the most notable.

However, horror tends not to enter the equation. Okay, there have been occasional efforts here and there, like Eternal Darkness on the GameCube. And yeah, we’ve seen the odd horror game get published by the company (like Fatal Frame for the Wii U and Spirit Camera for the 3DS) …

But it’s generally been a genre the company has stayed far away from, especially given its differences in tone compared to their other works.

However, it seems that may change soon. Why? Because out of the blue, Nintendo published a teaser for a title known only as ‘Emio’, with their social media accounts going into overdrive to promote it under the hashtag #WhoIsEmio.

Here’s the teaser if you haven’t seen it for yourself:

As well as a social media post with the hashtag in question:

So, what can we say about it? What could this mysterious game be? And who the heck would be making it?

Well for starters, it seems like a Nintendo-published title at the very least. Not only is the company promoting it before literally anyone else online, but they’re doing so across all regions at the same time too.

Hence not only is it almost certainly published by them, but it’s probably also going to be heavily supervised by them to, if not made by an internal development team.

But what is it? What kind of game is Emio exactly?

Well, it’s really hard to tell. Based on the way the trailer is shot and the focus on this character, it’s definitely a horror game of some sort:

But what kind of horror game is another thing entirely. Could it be a villain focused action title? A visual novel? Something like Silent Hill or Resident Evil?

Honestly, we have no idea. We’d personally say it’s more likely to be a FNAF type villain focused game ourselves, but that’s just based on the video.

Which leaves us with the developer question. Who could be working on this one?

Well surprisingly, there’s a possible answer for that going around online. Earlier this week, it was reported that Bloober Team was working on a game for Nintendo under the codename ‘Project M’:

So, could this be what that refers to? Could Emio potentially be the Project M in question?

Yeah, we’d say so. The fact this project and Emio were announced at the same time just feels too unlikely to be coincidence. The timing is just too good here.

Regardless, that’s Emio for you. A surprise horror game from Nintendo that got announced off the bat with little information, but which appears to be connected to another recent project at the company.

So, what do you think it is? What sort of game do you think this Emio thing is even referring to?
