When Pokémon Pokopia was announced for Switch 2, we knew it do decently well in the sales department. After all, cozy survival like games do incredibly well on Nintendo consoles, with the likes of Animal Crossing New Horizons being one of the system’s biggest hits.
Add to this the everlasting popularity of the Pokémon IP, and well, it was always pretty obvious that the game would be one of the better selling spinoffs.

But nothing could prepare us for just how well it’s been selling so far. Why? Because not only has it become a smash hit, it’s also managed to outsell what the likes of Super Mario Odyssey sold on Switch 1 in the same time period! Here’s an article about how it’s sold over 2.2 million copies in its first weekend:

This is absolutely insane to us, and shows just how big of a deal this game really is. Indeed, despite hype levels initially being fairly muted compared to Mario Kart World or Donkey Kong Bananza, it seems like Pokopia could well be a system seller on par with them, if not an even bigger success than the likes of DK Bananza.

Given this game is likely at around 5-6 million copies sold so far, Pokopia outselling it isn’t unlikely
It also makes us realise how well certain other Nintendo games and franchises could sell in future too. After all, Animal Crossing hits a similar genre and target audience. How would a new game in that series fare on Switch 2? How well could the new update and Switch 2 update for that game do?
Then there’s Pokémon itself. Winds & Waves were announced a while ago, and they’re also exclusive to the console. Given that Scarlet and Violet did insane numbers on Switch 1, that Legends: Z-A did okay on Switch 2 despite also being on Switch 1 and that Pokopia is doing so well now, we can see some crazy results on that front. We hate to give too much hype to an unreleased game or anything, but damn, at this rate, Nintendo’s probably got 2027 in the bag. Any predictions that the console is suddenly going to fail or die off can probably be thrown right out the window at this point.
Still, what do you think? Did you buy Pokémon Pokopia when it launched on March 6th this year? How well do you think Pokémon games will do on Switch 2 in 2026 and 2027?
