As you know, the Super Mario Galaxy Movie has an almost absurd number of cameos and returning characters. There’s the cast from Super Mario Bros 2, with Mouser, Clawgrip and Wart making appearances in the film. There’s ROB, who acts as the guide to the Gateway Galaxy in this flick. And heck, there all manner of Mario Galaxy comebacks too, like Megaleg, Whittles and Star Bunnies to name just a few.
But it seems there’s another interesting set of characters appearing here too: Pikmin
Yep, as a new trailer on the Super Mario Galaxy Movie Twitter account shows, Pikmin will play a role in the film too. Here’s the trailer in question, showing a whole heap of characters:

Yeah, we’ve got all three kinds here. So, they’ve clearly got more than a cameo role here.
But what is it exactly? ROB’s role was obvious; he was a tour guide early in the film. The roles of the other NPC species were equally obvious; they were all Mario Galaxy species that made repeat appearances in the background of the two games. And the SMB 2 cast all appear in a casino scene with Peach and Toad.
Pikmin on the other hand, don’t have quite as obvious a purpose in the film. They’re not usually in the Galaxy games, and don’t have any real purpose in the plot.
However, they do make cameos in other Mario titles. Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour had them appear when the ball flew into some flowers, while the Switch 2 version of Super Mario Bros Wonder had them outside the windows of Light-Switch Mansion.

So, perhaps their role is similar here. Perhaps they’ll just be background cameos like in the main series and theme park.
