Well folks, it’s finally here. After 4 years of work by the development team, Paper Mario: The Origami King Refolded is now available to download.
And well, it’s quite the impressive project to say the least. Indeed, as the trailer below (and our previous interview here) show, the game does one hell of a lot to update The Origami King for a new generation.

Indeed, here are just a few of the interesting features in-store:
- Brand-new characters not found in the original game
- Unique character designs for every major NPC instead of reused ones from Color Splash or generic Toads
- A whole heap of new enemies inspired by other Mario titles, including returnees from past Paper Mario games like Clefts, Bandits and Ninjoes
- New weapons and items with all sorts of new patterns and effects
- The ability to buy recipes that work like the ones in past Paper Mario titles
- Updated partner mechanics to make them more useful in battle, like not having them miss every few of their attacks
- Adjustments to enemy and item stats to hopefully improve the game’s balance overall
- Text and localisation changes to improve the script
- New collectibles like figurines and concept art for the project that you can unlock in-game
- Plus, a ton of other changes to improve the game overall
It’s basically a fixed version of Paper Mario: The Origami King in many ways, and a version of the game that feels like it’s not been held back during to corporate mandates or questionable design decisions.
In fact, it may actually be the definitive way to play the game now, and the version we’d recommend people try out if they feel like giving Origami King a look in 2025.
So definitely give it a look if you’re a Paper Mario fan, or looking to replay The Origami King again. It’s a great update to the original game in just about every way, and something that’ll improve the experience tenfold. Here’s hoping other projects from the team (like Paper Mario: The Sticker Comet) reach a similar level of completion in future too!
