Yesterday, Nintendo released a new trailer for Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury. It was an amazing video, and revealed a lot of details about the Bowser’s Fury mode in the game, including the main gimmick of the mode, Bowser’s role in the adventure and the gameplay style in general.
However, it didn’t reveal everything. Is Bowser fought at the end of the mode, or multiple times throughout it? Is Bowser Jr a separate character you can play as in multiplayer mode, or an AI controlled ally?
And what’s the story/setup for the mode too?
All these questions and more left a lot of room for speculation, and left us wondering if Nintendo would provide more details at a later date.
As it turns out, the answer is yes! Why? Because earlier today, Nintendo released another trailer for Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, complete with even more details about the game and its new additions in the Switch port. Here’s the video if you haven’t seen it already:
There’s a lot there to look at, so let’s go through the main ones point by point.
Starting with Snapshot mode. Because just like in Odyssey, there’s a camera mode that lets you take photos in game and apply visual effects to them. It’s a neat addition, and one that’s likely going to work very well given how varied 3D World’s levels are in general.
So that’s one addition right there.
But it’s not the only one, nor the most exciting one.
No, that’s the online multiplayer functionality. Yep, just like in Super Mario Maker 2, players can play with others online in Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury too. It’s not just a side mode thing either: it’s a main story mode mechanic. Hence if you want to explore the Sprixie Kingdom with friends on the other side of the world… well now you can.
There’s also amiibo support too. Yep, not only does the game support all existing amiibo in some way or another, but also comes with support for new Cat Mario and cat Peach amiibo too. By scanning the former you can become Invincible Cat Mario at any point, and by the latter you can get a random powerup instead.
Hence the main story mode has a ton of additions, especially compared to things like Super Mario 3D All-Stars before it.
But what about Bowser’s Fury? What does the trailer reveal about that?
Well, quite a bit actually.
In fact, it actually reveals how Bowser works in the mode too. Apparently he breaks out of his slumber every so often in an attempt to kill Mario and co, before falling to sleep a while afterwards.
During that process, you either have to dodge his attacks until he gets exhausted and backs down, or (if you have enough Cat Shines), get the Giga Bell to become Giga Cat Mario and face Bowser in battle. It’s a creative setup, and one which reminds of in Breath of the Wild in terms of structure (since you can fight Calamity Ganon at any time there, just like you can fight Fury Bowser at any time in this mode).
It’s also one that’s very much like a cross between 3D World and Odyssey in terms of mechanics too, since like in the former you’re searching an open world for collectable items rather than trying to reach the end of a few linear obstacle courses. In fact, in a sense you could say it’s basically Super Mario Odyssey DLC in a way, except tacked onto a 3D World remake rather than Odyssey itself.
We also get a few details about the world and character mechanics here too.
That being, that the area is called Lake Lapcat, and that Bowser Jr is indeed an entirely new playable character you can take control of in co-op mode. So again, it seems the best case scenario was right here, and that Bowser’s Fury is indeed letting you play as Bowser Jr and explore an open sandbox rather than whatever fans feared before.
So yeah, that’s everything in the trailer. It’s amazing to see, and proves that 3D World + Bowser’s Fury is going to well worth picking up when it launches this February, even for those who played the original title on Wii U.
However, what do you think about it? Are you happy to see all these new features and additions here? What other things do you think Nintendo will reveal for Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury in the foreseeable future?
