Nintendo Apologises for Mario Kart World Misinformation

Nintendo Apologises for Mario Kart World Misinformation

When Mario Kart World came out earlier this month, a lot of people were left confused about how you unlocked Mirror Mode in the game. After all, the usual setup didn’t do anything this time around, and other explanations sounded more like rumours than anything else.

So, there was a lot of misinformation online about how you did it. Lots of people saying you needed to get a certain number of items in Free-Roam, beat all the cups with gold trophies, or anything other sequence of events under the sun.

And interestingly, Nintendo made the same mistake. Why? Because in a recent Nintendo UK promo email, they tried to explain how you could unlock Mirror Mode and failed miserably. Here’s what they said in the email:

Mirror Mode Misinformation

Nintendo’s incorrect Mirror Mode unlock criteria from a recent email

Mirror mode

Discover a new way to enjoy Grand Prix and Knockout Tour! You’ll need to come first in every 150cc Cup or Rally to unlock the Mirror option for the relevant mode.

It’s a logical explanation, and in every other game in the series it’d be perfectly correct…

But it’s not true in Mario Kart World. In this game, you don’t just unlock Mirror Mode by beating all the cups in 150cc.

You need other criteria too. You need to have done the following to get Mirror Mode in this game:

  1. Complete every 150cc Grand Prix Cup
  2. Complete every 150cc Knockout Tour Rally
  3. Complete 10 P-Switch Missions
  4. Collect 10 Peach Medallions
  5. Activate 10 ? Panels

And Nintendo quickly realised that too. Why? Because just a few days after the first email came out, a second one got sent out with a correction:

Mirror Mode Correction

Nintendo’s completed instructions for how to unlock Mirror Mode

So yeah, kudos Nintendo. Kudos for acknowledging your mistake and telling everyone the real way to unlock Mirror Mode in this game. It’s not great that you screwed up and sent everyone this misinformation in the first place, but it’s nice you corrected your error nonetheless. If only more people and companies did the same thing when they made a mistake like this…

Regardless, what do you think? Did you receive the incorrect email earlier this week? What do you think about Nintendo’s corrections here?
