Wow, yesterday certainly was a busy day for gaming events, wasn’t it?

Indeed, with a State of Play, Sonic Central and Level-5 Vision Showcase all on the same day, it was like Christmas come early for the gaming community. We got new Sonic LEGO sets and Generations footage, Ghost of Yotei announced as a Ghost of Tsushima sequel, and even a PlayStation 5 release for that Pokémon clone being sued by Nintendo.

But we also got one other pleasant surprise too. A nice new trailer for Professor Layton & the New World of Steam.

As you can see, there’s certainly a bit more here than the last time we saw the game. Like say, hints of the actual storyline for the new title.

Yep, as seen in various points in the trailer, the mystery of the day resolves around a supposed phantom gunslinger that wants to halt the march of progress in the town of Steam Bison. It’s almost certainly another hoax given the series history (heck, Layton even says it himself in the trailer):

But it’s an interesting setup nonetheless, and perhaps one of the only examples of a literal ghost story in the Professor Layton series as a whole. Wonder what the ‘logical’ explanation will be this time?

Regardless, we also see some gameplay too. This obviously includes a few puzzles (which we can’t really judge from the footage seen so far), but also have general movement and exploration work too. Put simply, there are arrows to navigate between different views of an area, while clicking on buildings and NPCs seems to either go there/zoom in on them for dialogue.

It seems like a decent enough system, though one that may have a tough time living up to simplicity of the original game’s touch screen controls.

Finally, there’s still no release date. Just 2025, and that’s it.

So, if you actually want to know when you’ll get to play this game, good luck finding out. Level-5 seem reluctant to provide release dates for any of their upcoming projects, with just about everything in the presentation saying either ‘2025’, ‘2026’ or even ‘who knows?’

Regardless, that’s the latest on Professor Layton & The New World of Steam. We do actually get story details and gameplay now, but the release date is as vague as ever.
