In the original Super Mario Galaxy, three of the most forgettable missions had you rescue Luigi in previously visited galaxies. These appeared after he was saved in Ghostly Galaxy’s first mission, and were so easy to complete that most players would finish them in a matter of seconds.
But did you know there’s actually dialogue for screwing up here? That Luigi actually says something different if you die in these missions before rescuing him?
Yep, as found by Mario Galaxy and Friday Night Funkin’ modder SPG64, Luigi’s dialogue changes if you get the star, then die and talk to him again. Here’s the tweet comparing the two pieces of dialogue:
Yeah in Super Mario Galaxy, dying on a Luigi Rescue Mission after saving him will give you some unique dialogue.
Most players wouldn't see this since the chances of you dying after completing one of these is very small. https://t.co/jvQKBLRiU7 pic.twitter.com/P3YqBzQUdE

As you can see, Luigi is not impressed by your stupidity here. He’s gobsmacked you managed to die in such a situation, and asks you to just get on with it and collect the star already.
And it makes perfect sense. Remember, these are the easiest missions in the entire game. The likelihood of a player dying before rescuing Luigi on the roof in Good Egg Galaxy, or saving Luigi from the Flipbugs in Honeyhive Galaxy, is low enough to be virtually non-existent.
So, by actually dying after the star spawns on top of that? Yeah, both Luigi and the developers know full well it’s just the player messing around. They know you’re wasting their time, and act accordingly.
Regardless, it’s a neat find, and a nice extra bit of dialogue in a game that we thought was all mapped out in 2024. So yeah, thanks to SPG64 for bringing it to our attention, and thanks to Nintendo for including it in the game. What a great little detail to leave in a title as iconic as this one!
