Another week, another addition to the retro game selection on the Nintendo Switch Online service.
With today’s addition being one of the most interesting in a while. That being, Mario Paint on the SNES, a drawing and music creation tool that gained quite the cult fanbase in its time. Here’s the trailer from the official Nintendo channel:

Plus, a post announcing the soundtrack is now available on Nintendo Music:

It’s more interest than the game has previously gotten in years, and quite the revival for Mario Paint overall. True, it’s not a new game by any means, but the the fact the original is now playable on Switch 1 and 2 with the expected mouse controls, means that a lot more people will likely come across the game than ever before.
What’s more, it also makes us wonder if the company will ever consider a sequel or follow up. After all, have you seen those video and social media stats?
The internet went absolutely crazy over the idea of this game making a comeback. Add this to a very dedicated community of Mario Paint fans that still use things like the music tool to this very day (at least in a modified form), and the passionate communities that formed around things like WarioWare DIY, Game Builder Garage and Super Mario Maker…
And well, it’s clear the interest in a game like this is out there. That a proper follow up with a decent budget and marketing support could get quite the community going.
So, we do hope Nintendo considers the idea at least. That Mario Paint stops being just a one-off with a 64DD exclusive successor, and gets the expanded sequel it actually needs.
Still, what are your thoughts? Are you happy to see Mario Paint revived for another generation? What are your memories with the SNES original, or its fan-made follow ups?
