Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Gets a Surprise Update

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Gets a Surprise Update

Damn, this is quite the surprise isn’t it? Out of nowhere, Nintendo pushed another update for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe yesterday, complete with a version change from 2.2.0 to 2.2.1.

But what actually changed here? What did they fix this time around?

Well from what we can tell, not a whole lot. In fact, the patch notes from the Nintendo of America website simply say the following:

  • Fixed issue where, when playing online in Berlin Byways, the image would get choppy.
  • Fixed issue where, when playing in London Loop, player is carried in by Lakitu after falling off of course and they were not returned to the appropriate location.

So the entire patch basically just fixes two minor bugs. One respawn one on London Loop, and one lag related one in Berlin Byways. They’re certainly real issues, but perhaps not ones that could justify a release at past midnight on a Wednesday the week before Christmas.

And that’s especially true given what bugs weren’t fixed here. Indeed, despite this being the third update since wave 1, the Ninja Hideaway softlock somehow remains intact, despite it being both a game breaking glitch and something that’s fairly easy to do by complete accident. Huh, guess this one is probably gonna remain in the game to the very end!

Regardless, that’s the update and what it fixes. It’s not a huge one, but it’s neat a few of these bugs were cleared up nonetheless. So what do you think about it? Are you surprised Nintendo released an update for this stuff so late in the year? And did you ever encounter these issues online beforehand?
