Yeah, we know what you’re thinking. After all, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe just got some DLC recently, didn’t it? And with the latest Splatoon game only being released last year, it’s obvious that Splatoon and Mario Kart 8 have multiplayer functionality, right?
Well yeah, they do. On the Nintendo Switch.
Back on the Wii U on the other hand, things were a bit different. Indeed, thanks to a security bug called ENLBufferPwn being found in these games, Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon 1 were taken offline for that console back in March, with no indication if or when service would ever return.
Fortunately, we now have our answer
Fortunately, that’s not the case. As mentioned earlier today on Nintendo’s Twitter pages, the games are fixed and will resume service tomorrow. Here’s the original post if you haven’t seen it already:
Starting on 03/08, we will be resuming online play for the Wii U games Splatoon and Mario Kart 8. We appreciate your patience during the extended wait.

It’s not all good news though. No, while the games are coming back tomorrow, there’s a hint that the company might take them offline for good if any more issues get found:
If further issues occur which make it difficult to continue supporting online play, we may have to discontinue the online play service for the Wii U games Splatoon and Mario Kart 8 at short notice. Should this occur, please note that offline play would continue to function normally.
So yeah, just be warned there. While the games are indeed coming back tomorrow, there’s a chance they might go down again if anything else comes up in future. Hence it may be a good idea to migrate to their Switch successors if you haven’t already.
Regardless, what do you think? Are you happy to hear that the Wii U version of Mario Kart 8 is going to be playable online again soon? Hell, are you playing the game on that console in general?
