Over the last year or so, Nintendo has slowly been improving Mario Kart World. They added new ways to unlock NPC drivers, like by capturing them with a UFO in free-roam. They added an item switch option like in 8 Deluxe. Heck, they even redid some of the ‘intermission’ tracks to make them more interesting, like those that connect to Koopa Troopa Beach.
And now it seems like Battle Mode may be getting a similar treatment. Why? Because fans have noticed that today’s promotional images for the game show a Bob-omb image in the icon for battle mode, indicating at the possible return of a fan-favourite feature!
Here’s the post about it from Reddit:
Bob-Omb Blast coming in the next update? The icon for Battle Mode was updated in today’s promotional images!

The new battle mode option with its updated icon:
As well as the original menu icon for comparison:
As you can see, the new one is definitely different here. There’s a Bob-omb where there wasn’t before, and that’s clearly hinting at the Bob-omb Blast game mode.
And it’s clear that Nintendo knows they screwed up too. Why? Because the original link on Reddit doesn’t work anymore. The URL just goes to an error page, and that’s it.
But they didn’t stop it being archived. So, if you need proof that the update is real, here’s the page as backed up on archive.is.
Still, now we know that Bob-omb Blast is clearly coming to the game, what else might be interesting here? Is that the only addition in the pipeline?
Not necessarily, no.
Since Mario Kart World’s updates don’t usually add just a single feature to the game. No, they tend to add a few different ones into the mix.
For example, version 1.2.0 added a basic tracker for free-roam missions, plus the option to race without CPU, have only mushrooms as items and view replay after downloading a time trial ghost.
While 1.3.0 let you see activated P-Switch missions, unlock NPC drivers by abducting them with UFOs, and join friends playing Knockout Tour online.
So, there’s a good chance that there’ll be a few other additions here as well. Maybe small tweaks to the rules available in battle mode, extra UI guidance for free-roam mode, or even something a bit more advanced like a music player.
It’s exciting stuff for sure, and leaves us wondering what else is going to be included this time around.
Regardless, that’s proof that Bob-omb Blast is on the way, along with another major update for the game. But what do you think it’ll entail? What features do you expect from the next Mario Kart World update in general?
