Is a New Switch 2 Model Already Planned?

Is a New Switch 2 Model Already Planned?

Given the Switch 2 only launched last year, you’d be forgiven for thinking that any new models or revisions were still a long way in the future. After all, Nintendo wants to sell the Switch 2 as is for the moment, and it can seem wasteful to consider updates like this within the first year or two because of that.

But that may not actually be the case. Why? Because a BlueSky user by the name of Sky has found what appears to be an unused model code for another Switch 2 revision on the official Nintendo website. Here’s their post about it in full:

I think I've discovered something interesting, but I have no idea what it implies:

On Nintendo's Account Portal, there's an unused model code under the name "OSM". (The Switch 2's model code is BEE.)

The portal has images for each Switch model, and requesting OSM returns an image of a Switch 2.

As you can see, the account portal has an unused model code labelled ‘OSM’, which brings up the same picture of the Switch 2 that the normal code (‘BEE’) does. Hence logically, there’s a possibility that a new Switch 2 revision could be in the works, and could be revealed sometime in the future.

Or could it?

Because as others on the site have pointed out, the model name doesn’t follow the same format as those used by previous Nintendo systems. Indeed, while the Switch 1 had its models use names starting with H:

  • HAC: Switch
  • HAD: Switch (Revision)
  • HDH: SW Lite
  • HEG: SW OLED

This one doesn’t fit the pattern. So, there’s a decent chance this could be just some other thing wants to announce in the near future. Like a peripheral for the console, or a random side product like a Nintendo 64 Classic or Nintendo Alarmo.

Hence the whole Switch 2 image could just be a misleading placeholder. It could just be some random one-off Nintendo product that has nothing to do with the console instead.

Could this be an unrelated product, like the Nintendo Alarmo?

Regardless, let’s assume that’s not the case for now. Let’s assume Nintendo have decided to scrap the model naming convention seen with earlier systems, and are really trying to update the Switch 2. What could this sort of revision be?

Well, I think there are some possibilities there. Most notably, that of a Switch Lite or other more ‘limited’ console.

Since well, Nintendo likely sees the writing on the wall for the industry at the moment. They know that the cost of living is soaring, that more and more of people’s budget is being spent on essentials rather than luxury items, and that things like tariffs and CPU shortages are going to hit prices like an incoming freight train.

And they also know that the effect of that could be bad for Nintendo’s future business. It’s not hard to imagine that more and more families are going to stick to PC or mobile games rather than spent half their monthly income on a home console or three, and that people could end up choosing live-service games like Minecraft, Fortnite or Roblox over their own franchises given that the former are cheap (or free) on mobile and PC.

So, instead of them letting the console become a luxury good aimed squarely at the wealthy, it seems possible that a lower priced system with less features and tech could be the company’s focus here. Like say, a Switch 2 Lite that only plays games in portable mode and makes a few other cuts here and there to bring the price down to something closer to the Switch 1.

A Nintendo Switch 2 Lite in the style of the Switch Lite could be a winning strategy

That way, they could appeal to audiences wary of the Switch 2’s high price point, and get a reason to stop producing the original Switch to save on developer resources. After all, you don’t want to have to develop and release Switch 1 games in this day and age. Nor give people a reason not to upgrade to the new console.

But hey, that’s just our possible theory. It’s entirely possible this is just a minor Switch 2 revision without any notable changes, or a piece of hardware unrelated to the console at all.

So, what are your thoughts here? What could this new model code mean?
