Well folks, it’s finally here! After many years of waiting (and memes about Silksong being in every Nintendo Direct and Indie World Showcase under the sun), Team Cherry has now graced us with a release date for the highly anticipated title. Yep, as the trailer below shows, the game is being released on the 4th of September 2025:

What’s more, they also gave us a reason for the game’s lengthy development too. Here’s that reason, courtesy of an interview the team did with Bloomberg:
It was never stuck or anything. It was always progressing. It’s just the case that we’re a small team, and games take a lot of time. There wasn’t any big controversial moment behind it.
With the reason for that being that there was no real pressure to rush the game, and they just wanted to make it as good as it can be, with every crazy idea they had making it into the game:
You’re always working on a new idea, new item, new area, new boss, That stuff’s so nice. It’s for the sake of just completing the game that we’re stopping. We could have kept going.
And to be honest, we’re not surprised by that. Indeed, as someone who’s taken our own first steps into game development in the past, we know full well how easy it is to keep working on a game indefinitely if you’re having fun with it. As they say themselves, it’s easy to just keep coming up with interesting ideas and adding more and more to your dream project as a result of that.
It’s likely why JRR Tolkien spent so long working on The Silmarillion, why Richard Williams spent 31 years working on The Thief and the Cobbler, and why more ambitious fan projects like Mushroom Kingdom Fusion have a development cycle measured in decades. If you’ve got a passionate creator or team and there’s no pressure to release the project looming over them, it’s all too easy to have that project continue for decades on end.
Regardless, it’s nearly here. In just 2 weeks, Hollow Knight: Silksong will be ready to play on all major platforms. It’s an exciting time for fans of the original, and the end of what felt like an eternity in development.
So, what are your thoughts? Are you excited for the final game? How does it feel knowing that such a highly anticipated game is now just around the corner?
