No, we’re not making that up. Nintendo and Illumination have officially announced that the Star Fox protagonist is appearing in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, as shown here:

It’s not the first appearance of a character from another Nintendo series in the film, given that Pikmin and ROB have also been confirmed:

But it’s by far the strangest one. Pikmin at least previously made a few cameos in Mario spinoff games, and ROB was playable in Mario Kart DS. So, there’s at least something of a Marioverse connection there.

Fox on the other hand?

The nearest thing to a mainline Mario appearance from him was a cut cameo for Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and minor roles in the German Club Nintendo comics and Super Mario Kun manga. For the most part, he only ever meets Mario and co in the Super Smash Bros series.

So, we’re not entirely sure what his role will be here. Will he be a background cameo in a random space scene? Appear in a post credits teaser for a Super Smash Bros movie? Have some sort of major role in the film that’s yet undocumented?

Based on the fact he’s got an official poster, the former two seem pretty unlikely. He’s probably playing more than a bit part role, that’s for sure.

And then there’s a related question here: who else is going to show up?

Since well, other Nintendo characters in these films opens up some interesting possibilities there. Could Captain Falcon make an appearance, given his cameos and references throughout the series? Could Kirby or Samus end up getting in somehow, adding more credence to a planned Smash Bros style crossover at a later date?

Honestly, the door seems open for just about anyone at this point. If Nintendo randomly showed footage of Samus teaming up with Orbulon to fight the Shroobs and Tatanga, we’d probably think it pretty normal by comparison.
