Fan Remakes Super Mario Bros 1 For Game Boy

Fan Remakes Super Mario Bros 1 For Game Boy

When it comes to fan remakes for older consoles, we’ve seen some impressive projects in the last few years. There was that Super Mario Land remake for SNES, which reimagined the classic Game Boy game in the style of the New Super Mario Bros series. There was a Zelda 1 remake for NES, which fixed various technical issues and implemented MP3 quality music via MSU-1…

And now it seems Super Mario Bros has gotten the same treatment too. Yep, Twitter user Mico27 has now ported that game to Game Boy too, complete with extra worlds, powerups, bosses and other content not found in the original game. Here’s their original message about it:

Plus, a video from their YouTube channels showing more of the game in action:

As you can see, it looks very different from the original game. Indeed, the art style is a lot closer to Super Mario Land 1 than the original Super Mario Bros, with small sprites and tiles designed specifically to fit in the limited screen space available. It’s a unique aesthetic, and one that honestly works better than porting the graphics outright would have, at least from a gameplay standpoint.

And the extra content is incredible to see too. You’ve got a rideable Yoshi as a powerup, doing something that even Nintendo likely thought was impossible in the olden days. Bosses like King Totomesu and Tatanga return from Super Mario Land, complete with semi unique boss fights based on that game. There’s what appears to be a brand-new battle with a giant version of Bowser, far removed from the bridge setup from the vanilla game…

Heck, you’ve even the likes of Wario in this one! So yeah, if you want an upgraded and expanded version of the original Super Mario Bros, this might actually be the one to play. It’s certainly more content heavy than any other remakes or fan hacks we’ve seen in the past!

Definitely check it out if you’re a fan of the original Super Mario Bros! It’s well worth it!
