When it came to DLC for existing games, some options seemed a lot more likely than others. There was Mario Kart World, which fans were convinced was going to get DLC announced in the previous Nintendo Direct. There was Super Mario Bros Wonder, which indeed got a Switch 2 Edition in the form of Super Mario Bros. Wonder – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Meetup in Bellabel Park.
Plus, stuff like Pokémon Legends Z-A, which fans knew was getting something at some point or another.
But one game we didn’t expect to see get the DLC treatment was Donkey Kong Bananza. That’s because the game is already a massive single player adventure packed to the gills with levels and content, and a title that feels so ‘finished’ that even Super Mario Odyssey seems like a beta release by comparison. It’s a complete game with everything to it. What’s even left to add here?
Well, Donkey Kong Island and Emerald Rush apparently! Yep, as Nintendo announced in the last Direct, the game has now received some DLC that adds a brand-new level based on the Donkey Kong 64 map screen, plus a new game mode where you race through levels collecting emeralds for the ‘not quite redeemed but slightly friendlier’ Void Kong. Here’s the trailer if you haven’t seen it already:

So yeah, Donkey Kong Bananza now has DLC. Somehow.
And yes, we did say “has” DLC here. Since well, the DLC has already been released and is now available to buy online for about $20.
Yeah, we were surprised to hear that too. It certainly made us worried that the DLC was mostly cut content from the main game, that’s for sure.
What’s more, it seems like Nintendo still isn’t done with the idea. No, not only have they added Emerald Rush to the game with a ton of unlockables (like these statues)…

A DK & Pauline statue from the DLC
But the Japanese site says the mode will be getting further events and updates too, which add even more statues to the game. So, if you want statues of the Bananza forms or animal buddies like Enguarde, it seems you’re in luck there.
Regardless, that’s the new content that’s been added to the game. So, what are your thoughts on it? Are you playing Emerald Rush at the moment?
