When it comes to video game failures, we’ve seen quite a few in our time. We’ve seen games fail miserably, having only sold tens of thousands of copies despite a major marketing campaign. We’ve seen games review poorly, with some notable offenders getting 1s and 2s across the board.
And we’ve seen failed games shut down quickly too, as the companies involved realised their investment was best spent elsewhere.
But Concord may have set a world record. Why? Because not only has it been one of the worst flops in years…
It’s also got to hold the record for quickest video game shut down too.
That’s because Sony has announced the game will be shutting down on September 6th, with the company “exploring options that will better reach their players”
In other words? It’s dead. The game is already being shuttered just a month after its release. That’s just insane to us.
And it’s insane to us because online shut downs usually take a fair bit of time, even for complete failures. For example, Devil’s Third was a notorious flop during the Wii U era, getting horrendously negative reviews and selling miserably upon release. Heck, the game is rumoured to have sold Concord levels of games, with rumours stating it may have only sold 3,000 copies in North America in its first month on sale.
Regardless, the game still stayed online for 16 months. Despite being a miserable failure in every way, Nintendo still thought the game was worth keeping around for a while.
So to see a game shut down within its first month is something rather special indeed. It indicates that not only did it bomb hard, but the companies involved saw absolutely no potential for the game in future. That regardless of what they did, nothing could possibly redeem this disaster.
Still, that’s it for Concord. The game’s shutting down after a month, having sold worse than the Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story remake or Chibi Robo Zip Lash.
So, what are your thoughts on the situation? Are you shocked the game is going down this quickly? What are your thoughts on the game and its concept as a whole?
