Two Different Game Devs Talk Franchise Fatique, Spot the Difference!

Oh look, isn’t this some good timing?  Apparently, two different dev teams talked about franchise fatique and yearly installments this year, both with completely contrasting views on the issue and how many games should be released in quick succession.  One of these groups were two Animal Crossing New Leaf developers, one was Ubisoft’s Lionel Raynaud.

First up, the Animal Crossing guys said this:

No matter what the franchise is if you want to have it grow, it’s important that it doesn’t do the same thing over and over again. It leads to fatigue. As a franchise I think everybody at Nintendo is trying to think what we can do to make these franchises grow and continue, and what changes are necessary for that. [Super Mario producer] Mr. Koizumi’s team, I think, is trying to do the same as well.

Seems reasonable.  Rushing sequels out the door for quick cash is always going to lead to a half assed, low quality product in the long run.  Especially if they go on as long as say, the Land Before Time sequels or the near endless (read, 30 games in 3 years) Super Sig World titles.

And then, we get Ubisoft’s view… which exemplifies exactly what’s wrong with much of today’s sequel driven culture:

We are able to offer people a new Assassin’s Creed every year because they want Assassin’s Creed every year. As long as this is true we would be very stupid to not satisfy this need, but it puts a lot of pressure on us to create something that will never disappoint.

It needs to keep the series core values and we need to really make sure that we have a good, high level understanding of what it is to be an Assassin. We have to make sure we always deliver a better feel and overall experience every time while still bringing something that they haven’t seen before that’s consistent with being an Assassin in the world we’ve created.”

Yeah.  Sorry, but while I do admire the effort Ubisoft puts into each of their games and I don’t doubt for a minute that each Assassin’s Creed game is designed to be as fantastic a game as possible, one game a year is just too much for any franchise.

But what do you think?  Whose views do you agree with here?  Those of the Animal Crossing guys saying you shouldn’t release too many games to avoid fatique or the Ubisoft representative saying one game a year is perfectly fine?

I think people shouldn’t release games so fast.

As long as it isn’t rushed

Why does there have to be only two choices? You should try to leave some space before another sequel and then hitting it again after that break.

I like the animal crossing choice better.
