Zelda 30 Year Tribute Game Taken Down by Nintendo

Well, that was quick, wasn’t it?

Up until about a day ago, there was a remake of the original Legend of Zelda game in 3D available to play online at the ‘Zelda 30 Year Tribute’ website. It was a fairly impressive project, given that it was a full remake of a classic Nintendo game in Javascript, but people pointed out that it wasn’t likely to stay up in the long run. After all, Full Screen Mario didn’t last too long, and nor did that Unity remake of Super Mario 64’s Bob-omb Battlefield.

But now Nintendo has asked the owners of the site to take it down, and they’ve unfortunately complied. Here’s the message:

Nintendo asked us to remove this site for copyright infringement. I guess Zelda30Tribute was a little too pixel perfect 🙂 We’re sad about that, but we get it. We started this project because we love Nintendo and the joy they have given us throughout the years. From the start of development, we knew this result could potentially happen. Nintendo has every right to protect their IP. No complaints from us, we had a blast working on this tribute and made some friends along the way.

Either way, thanks Nintendo. Thanks for ruining yet another great fan project like this, just days after it became big. Why not just take advantage of the free publicity for once in your goddamned lives?

What do you think about this project being taken down? And if you managed to play it beforehand, what did you think of the game in general?

Umm? @CM30 You do realize that there's pirated versions of this game online right? :/ Meh? The game seems a little too real to work on a browser. Even if they empress the game. They already had to fire one of their employees for being a cam girl. I don't think we should be calling out Nintendo just for that one fan game. Even the guys who made it had said that they have no problems with Nintendo asking them to take the game down. If they were making money off it and claim that it's their original game do… Read more »

You can hardly call this a fangame, it's an unauthorized remake. You can't just put a game out for free on the internet and not expect the owners to take action. It's the same for all these fan projects trying to accomplish the same thing that get shut down. I don't know why people are surprised.
