Paper Mario Colors of Creation; The Super Paper Mario Sequel You’ve Been Waiting For?

When it comes to the Paper Mario series, there’s not really much hope on the official front. Sticker Star took out the storyline and interesting characters. Paper Jam forgot about everything except what was in Sticker Star. And Colour Splash… well, that’s got a reception best described as ‘hostile’. Seriously, people are actually petitioning to get that game cancelled.

As a result, it’s up to the fans to do what Nintendo’t; make a decent Paper Mario sequel. And there have been some really good attempts in the past too. Like Paper Mario 3D Land, which mixed classic Paper Mario with the gameplay style of Super Mario 3D Land and World. Or Epic Paper Mario, which turned out to be a lot more epic than anything Nintendo made in the last couple of years.

And so here’s another one. Namely, Paper Mario Colors of Creation. Made by Mario Fan Games Galaxy user Benstar, this hopes to be another original Paper Mario game with its own story, interesting gameplay mechanics and art style, among other things.

So what’s the hook?

Well, it’s a Super Paper Mario sequel. So it’s a 2D platformer/RPG hybrid, albeit one which mixes Colour Splash esque colour mechanics with classic Paper Mario characters and originality. Here are some interesting screenshots of it:

Paper Mario Fangame 1

As well as some videos showing game mechanics and new enemies:

Notice anything interesting? Well, there’s apparently an audience in this one, like in the Thousand Year Door. So not only do we have colour related puzzles and gimmicks and Super Paper Mario esque platforming, but also a Paper Mario 2 esque audience system to go along with it. It’s also apparently got badges, a popular mechanic which Super Paper Mario (and later games) didn’t bother to include.

To add to this, there’s also some interesting new music tracks that have been posted for the game. Like this one for the main city, Penton:

As well as underground themes and a haunted house song:

Yeah, the latter remixes parts of the Luigi’s Mansion theme and its sequels Gloomy Manor theme. But it certainly sounds very appropriate for a ghost house, don’t you think?

Either way, Paper Mario Colors of Creation looks like an interesting game. Is it the best Paper Mario fan game I’ve seen so far? Not yet, since there’s some very, very tough competition on that front. But as a general rule, I’m more interested in this title than I am in Color Splash. Who wouldn’t be? It’s got a more interesting storyline, better looking gameplay mechanics and something resembling charm and creativity.

But what do you think? Does this Super Paper Mario sequel seem interesting to you?

  1. This does look very interesting! And it's even got it's own music!

See, this is the kind of project I'd like to compose for. Shame I procrastinate so much, lmao.

  2. Hi, I'm part of the project; I originally found it in the ICU Gigasoft forums. I'm doing level design and contributed some music as well. I think you could compose some tracks; I'm not great at it myself and have massive schedule slips. You can listen if you like to a beta I had:

Edit: Also, why is everything in bold?

Hey, nice to meet you! I'll PM you about this.

  4. Got the message!
Very nice but (and I don't mean to jinx anything) but how has Nintendo not put the hammer to this yet?
Nintendo is a heck of a lot more lax about fangames, and it's more original so it's not like that SM64 recreation in Unity that was C&D'd. It also needs to be much more popular to reach 'Project M' level. I am a bit worried that Epic Paper Mario, another fangame by a dev of two previous Mario RPG's, will be C&D'd because it got a lot more popularity on GameJolt, receiving about 150k views so far (crossing over to their other games as well). I'd want that growth only to happen after the game is released so if it does, people can modify it and spread it around faster than Nintendo can take it down.

  5. That is a weird reason to not play RPGs. Besides puzzle games, there is no better game for time or attention span than games where you can pause at about any moment 🙂

    Yeah… I made some tracks too, but I am more of a references-to-other-games/remixes tracks…

  7. I'd like to think I can mix between remixes and original content for that. I liked how Seven Sages and Starlite Worlds used remixes (covers in that case), but ideally I'd like as close to a balance as possible for that. I'm glad you actually remix the music instead of changing the instruments and going "Well that's about that!" Currently, I'm at the point where I can make melodies well, but the issue is coming up with many things and they don't fit at all. Looking at other tracks (the ones I listen to, anyway) gave me a lot of detail.
Well, a lot of older ones I want to play use save points. Like Final Fantasy 7, Paper Mario, and a handful of others. I'm at a point where I need to be ready to leave at any minute so if I'm in the middle of a boss battle or I'm not anywhere near a save point, then I'm kind of screwed lol.
Heh, I know that feeling. I recommend playing with savestates, but only using it to pick up from a previous playthrough and not to cheat deaths. After all, they are older games.

I'm good at making melodies too (not THAT good), but I always like to insert some references here and there 😀

Wwwwwow, yeah. I'm not gonna be able to top that no matter what I do, haha!

Hey, do your best! Every musician has his/her own style, and I am sure you have potential! :3

That is true. I try to get as close to how 'derivative' the thing I'm making is. Like Freezefrost Mountain has no connections at all, while Toad Town, you bet that's gonna have many. I was surprised that Penton would receive just that as a heavy source material. Even moreso that Benstar had nothing more to say about it.

If I make a tutorial about the music stuff, I'm not going to dance around like the tutorials I see (I can't read sheet music, the only pitch I can recognize is C, I have no musical education, etc.) If you want me to go into more detail I could.

I'm also gonna give up on this bold text. Gonna script it out!

    I'm rrrright there with ya.

  13. I believe I mentioned it before, but the track is good, but the placing I'm not so sure about. It'd be like, "Oh Rogueport that theme, I know, we'll use the SMB1 Underground as a base remix of that." Actually, I'm not sure about @ReWilfre's experience track with composing, so maybe he'd like to share. 🙂

Ok, my experience? Oh, I have Musical Formation and Technology (MFT), Piano and Choir lessons. I only started composing a year ago… 😛

  15. I thought I mentioned it before, but I guess I'll say it here since I apparently didn't. I do have some musical education in terms of playing instruments (very much mandatory, heh) but I don't count it because it has nothing to do with composing.

  16. I personally am self-taught with piano myself, but I can't play any of the songs I've made. :B

I'm not that good at it anyway, haha!

  17. If it's a piece I really like I try to use the keyboard so I can play it myself. Funny how I have more trouble playing the instruments than composing. For example, I keep forgetting it, but when I play out a part of a piece I liked that I made, I have to relearn "L/ 35 36 Y65E HM HL EN 5N HM LN".
