Super Smash Bros, Nintendo and E3; Two More Sets of Rumours!

One set’s from 4chan, one set’s from Neogaf… and both say completely different things about what Nintendo’s going to reveal at this E3.  So let’s look at both of them and see which one (if any) is most plausible:

Rumour List 1; The 4chan Rumours

Smash Bros rumour

Summary:

  • The Wii U Super Smash Bros title is called Super Smash Bros Calamity, with the 3DS one called Super Smash Bros Calamity Portable.
  • Newcomers in the trailer are Mewtwo, Palutena, Shulk, Tharja and Pac-Man
  • The trailer is exactly 1:35 in length, entirely CGI, is a throwback to Melee’s opening and has a brand new orchestrated theme tune.

My Verdict:

It’s not too unrealistic, for the most part.  Okay, the list of ‘returning’ characters shown in just one trailer is a bit overkill (keep in mind Brawl only showed about four of them, and Melee didn’t show many more), but the choice of newcomers is for the most part kind of likely.  Pac-Man’s a likely third party character (albeit perhaps not the most exciting one to end the trailer on), Palutena, Shulk and and Mewtwo are extremely likely characters for the next Smash Bros title and the description of the trailer and music seems pretty much like what Nintendo would show.

However, there are two things that make me a bit skeptical (apart from the source of the rumour).  One, I have no idea who ‘Tharja’ is (apparently a Fire Emblem character), hence I’m not sure how likely she’d be as a playable character.  Aren’t Chrom and Roy kind of more popular with the Fire Emblem and Smash Bros fandom these days?

The game title makes me skeptical too, ‘Calamity’ seems like a rather poorly thought out name for a Super Smash Bros title and doesn’t really remind me of the older games much.  After all, Melee sounded a bit sophisticated, Brawl flowed pretty well… Calamity doesn’t.  Still, none of the ‘rumoured’ names have ever sounded plausible to me, Super Smash Bros Universe doesn’t fit, Super Smash Bros Fisticuffs sounds ridiculous and Super Smash Bros Collision sounds wrong as well.

And that’s rumour one.  Now onto rumour number two!

Rumour List 2: The Neogaf Rumour

Now here’s the rumour from Neogaf.  Goodness, this will take a while to analyse and discuss, since it’s literally one giant wall of text.

My understanding this particular Direct would be week after next, early that week. That was the plan for this particular direct, so evidently they moved it so it can be during E3 itself…interesting. I’m still thinking there may be a smaller Mini direct week after next though. So as to not spill the beans, ill share what I believe will be the contents of this Dorect along with a few tidbits about each thing. It’s going to be a largely Wii U Direct. These aren’t in any particular order of actual showing, rather its going by what things people want to hear the most about.

1. Retro: Finally after at least a few years development, their game is finally ready to be unveiled. What is it? It’s an old Nintendo IP that people have wanted them to do for a while, but no one thought they had the guts to do it-but they did. I’m very happy with the one they chose to do. It’ll definitely fall into that “Wooooo helllll yeah!!!” category for a vast majority I think. Trailer set to be shown at the Direct.

2. Mario….wow is everyone in for a really huge treat with this!!! I know the exact title of the latest adventure. Everything’s been so vague hint wise so ill say something a little more exact about it. That 100 Year Guy is right on one thing-it’s an enormously large, grand adventure in scope and size. Development began on Wii, not too long after Galaxy 2 was done. This adventure brings together a lot of levels, concepts, ideas, level types, mechanics and characters people have been begging for a long time for. Maybe you’ll finally see Wart again this time 😉 it makes very clever, imaginative use of the game pad but its definitely not forced. You can certainly play with traditional controls. Trailer and a giid look at game play on the Direct. Release set for late October. This October.

3. Zelda. First the bad news..it’s a mid 2015 title at the soonest. They are debating between middle and Thanksgiving/Christmas 2015. Aim is to have most of if not all the game to look like that tech demo from 2 years ago. Story is the longest and grandest in the series. You MAY see some brief concept art at this E3 but they’re looking more to fully unveil it early next year. They’re debating between a few ideas as well as concepts and which they want to use. They want a familiar yet really fresh take on this for everyone. How soon you’ll get it depends on that. They may again make a brief mention at this direct with the understanding it’s still too early to show. No exact title yet. Just Zelda Wii U ATM.

4. Mario Kart U….this mighta changed but last impression I got from it is its basically a souped up Mario Kart 7…literally. Think that, online play if course and Miiverse integration slapped in. It should be out in time for this Christmas 2013. Aim was to bring out something for the U that’s on the safe side that’s guaranteed to help jump start the U. Some added tweaks and whistles here and there. Trailer plus some gameplay at the Direct.

5. Super Smash Bros. 4…As promised by Mr. Iwata and Reggie, it will finally be unveiled during this Direct. What you’re about to see is…odd. How to describe…there will be an unveil trailer, and during this trailer a few characters in the. Roster will be announced. All the others are black shadowy silhouettes. You should get a good idea who some of them are, others will be “Who the hell’s that supposed to be!?” The full roster will be gradually unveiled from now till release. Release is aiming for Thanksgiving 2014. It might slip to closer to Christmas though. The aim is to launch both the 3DS and U games same day, so they’ll do what it takes to get that to happen. This is the big 2014 game for Nintendo. 3DS version is further along than the U one. That one will also be shown on th Direct. Some parts of U version done, others still cooking. Coding, etc set to start in earnest this fall. It looks great 😉

6. General Wii U…possibly price cut, they really would rather not but they understand this nay be the only way to re jump start it. Possible Ambassador Program 2, looking at a few neat ideas for that. They will attempt one last time to very clearly communicate what the U is and isn’t. They want to get people excited again and show good value.

X and Yarn Yoshi will have trailers. Both 2014 games. SMT x Fire Emblem is still too soon to show, but it’s a really weird ass collaboration project-will be in a good way for fans of both,

One final huge surprise.,.its both a oh hell this makes sense and with kind of thing rolled into one. The aim is to introduce it fully in Fall of Winter. Timing still being decided. May or may not be announced at the Direct.

Summary:

No need for one, the rumour itself is in text format this time.

My Verdict:

Much wider in scope and a tad vaguer than the 4chan posted one, there are quite a few different things here with different chances of being true.  So let’s break down the rumours line by line.

So Retro Studios’ new game is apparently a big deal and is an old Nintendo IP people have wanted them to work on for a while.  That’s not much to go on (seriously, you could count near enough any Nintendo series under that classification), but my best guess is that the poster is talking about something like Mach Rider, F-Zero or something of a similar nature.

It’s hard to really say whether this is accurate to be honest.  Could, could not.  We get so little in way of details that there’s not really much to base an opinion off of.

The talk about Mario is just as vague as well. However, it does seem like we’ve got another person claiming this new title is going to be a Super Mario 64 style open adventure rather than a Galaxy or 3D Land style linear title, so there’s a fairly good chance the dream 3D Mario game everyone’s been waiting from is just around the corner.

The Galaxy 2 development talk is plausible enough, Nintendo always starts their new projects well in advance of their release date. Wasn’t Pokemon X and Y in development right after Black and White/Black and White 2? And things like their consoles are always started a few years before the current one reaches the end of its lifespan. So this part seems plausible, especially given that we’re talking a BIG Mario game that is supposedly due out this year.

As for Wart and characters/elements people have been waiting a long time for, my assumption here is that he means this game will bring back many of the one time characters and enemies from the NES/SNES Mario titles, Wart and his Subcon army among them. Is this likely? Possibly, Nintendo really does love their Mario nostalgia nowadays, and literally everyone else has been brought back in either New Super Mario Bros 1, 2, Wii or U or Super Mario Galaxy 1, 2 or 3D Land. So I’m assuming he’s referring to SMB 2 characters, Super Mario Land 1-2 characters and possibly elements like co-op multiplayer or other playable characters like Wario and Waluigi, since those are things people have waited years for.

The talk of a trailer at Nintendo Direct is already confirmed, so it’s not even a rumour at this point.

More vague wording here with the Zelda rumour, but it does definitely sound plausible given Nintendo’s long development times for the series and their attempts to always top Ocarina of Time. Perhaps it means we’ll get some very early artwork like we did with Zelda Wii/Skyward Sword?

Zelda Wii art

So nothing here seems too outlandish, although that might be because the rumour poster has made absolutely zero verifiable claims.

You should get a good idea who some of them are, others will be “Who the hell’s that supposed to be!?”

This however makes me skeptical. Sure Smash Bros 4 will be unveiled, but I’m rather skeptical Nintendo will announce the full roster right now and show the characters as mere silhouettes, because that’d be a complete anti climax. I’m also not sure how many characters could really be that non visually distinctive in silhouette, since Nintendo’s main ones tend to have rather unique visual designs.

King Boo Shadow

Above: Heck, Luigi’s Mansion 2 even used silhouettes for the characters and mansions, yet no one failed to recognise any of them.

Dream Team 3DS

Above: And Dream Team’s unique 3DS XL design relies on the characters look distinctive…

So I don’t really think this is plausible to be honest, simply because every Nintendo character is recognisable enough (if you’ve seen them before in some fashion) that even their silhouettes or shadows would give away their identity. You could literally take the top 15 characters on the poll to the right, turn them into entirely black silhouettes and still recognise each and every one of them.

The full roster will be gradually unveiled from now till release.

This seems a bit more plausible, and hints at a Dojo like the one Brawl had before its release. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if they brought that back for this game.

Coding, etc set to start in earnest this Autumn? What the hell have they been working on beforehand then to show off at Nintendo Direct? Hole in logic there.

I do however think the talk of it being the big ‘2014 game’ for Nintendo is most likely accurate though. Nearly every single rumour and supposed leak we’ve ever seen has mentioned that, and I’m starting to suspect at least one person might be on to something.

But that’s not all! They then posted some more details on these rumours. So let’s look at these too…

Regarding Mario,,giving the exact title’s a lot riskier..rather ill state one of the titles that was being debated and that should give you a good idea what the final title is…Super Mario Retroverse U.

So, Super Mario Retroverse U as a debated title? That would fit well with the concept of a Mario 64 style game with lots of NES/SNES Mario era elements. Still sounds a bit lame though.

Regarding Mario Kart..believe me, I expected an all new game too and am surprised its just a souped up 7. If you wanna sell to a potential username, with guaranteed sales sometimes you need to play it safe with something that’s sold well.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this was accurate. Every recent Mario Kart game has been playing it a bit safe to be honest, and I think Nintendo have kind of figured out every possible aspect of Mario Kart with the last three or so titles. So yes, I’d be fairly confident in saying this will basically be a Mario Kart 7 style game with some features from the DS and Wii versions bolted on and the expected new characters and tracks.

Mario Kart 7 Box

Above: Wasn’t Mario Kart 7 itself a ‘souped up’ Mario Kart Wii?

Regarding Smash Bros…in the trailer, with the silhouette stuff, the camera is flying down an open space with the characters standing on the sides. There’s a LOT if characters this time. Samurai had said he didn’t want as many but they decided to go all out this time for the fans. They’re wanting to do a Dojo type thing again since the last time was received very well.

Lots of characters seems plausible to be honest. They know what the fans want, and its characters. Seriously, if you don’t believe there’ll be a lot of characters in the new Smash Bros game, take a good look at any forum dedicated to it and see what 99% of the topics are dedicated to. Or what all the articles online are dedicated to. Sakurai could have seriously just said ‘Smash Bros 4 will be Smash Bros Brawl with 70 characters’ and the internet at large will still be happy.

Smash Bros Brawl cast

Above: The one reason people care for Smash Bros in general.

Every said in this part of the rumour sounds fairly likely to happen.

So, what’s my verdict overall on the rumours here? Well to be honest, I’m not too sure. Some of them sound likely, some of them are basically been confirmed already and some seem suspect (revealing all the Smash Bros 4 roster in any way being the most suspicious), so I’ll just say it’s got about a 50% chance of being true.

As for what rumour is most likely overall, possibly the 4chan one to be honest. Not because the source is accurate or anything, but simply because the things it says seem a lot more ‘low key’ and plausible than the things said by the individual who posted the Neogaf rumours. We’ve got a few new Smash Bros characters, we’ve got a trailer in a style we’ve seen before and we don’t generally have anything that sounds too unlikely.

So yes, I think the 4chan one is probably the more plausible of the two, but that both should be taken with a hefty grain of salt and should be considered wishful thinking at best.

What do you think of these two rumours?

LOL, As soon as I saw Tharja, I was like: IMPOSSIBLE! I would prefer Lucina 1000x more than tharja

Lucina is more popular, but Tharja has a far more unique set of skills, and would make a better additional player than Lucina would. I can’t see Lucina being very different from Chrom, perhaps being slightly faster and less powerful maybe, but Tharja is a magic user, and thus can add a whole new dimension of possibilities for a fire emblem character.

I don’t know what you said about the silhouettes. Nintendo did this once before remember? In the first SSBB they showed the silhouettes of all the characters that weren’t unlocked, which gave a hint if who they were.

I meant SSB. (Super Smash Bros.)

| Honestly, this is completely fake. I’ve followed Nintendo all my life and know how it thinks. Super Smash Bros. Calamity is a ridiculous title in the first place, and has no legitimate standing whatsoever. Nintendo, when they don’t have a final title (as this is certainly NOT a final title), simply label their projects after a word announcing how they feel about it (Wii = Revolution) or in the more common cases, after it’s series name (Mario Kart Wii = Mario Kart Wii; Super Mario 3DS = Super Mario 3D Land). Besides. The character selection is FAR too biased… Read more »

as far as Tharja is concerned, no she is not the most famous fire emblem character, however, she is the third most popular female character from Awakening, second only to Lucina and the customizable female avatar character, who seems a poor choice based on her changing appearance. Tharja seems very plausible for a new fire emblem character, as she has both decent popularity in the new game, and is a magic user, and therefore would have a more unique skill set and play style in comparison with the already-present sword-wielders from the series. I’m not saying that this rumor is… Read more »
