Retro Studios Said to be Working on New IP
When it comes to games, Retro Studios hasn’t really worked on too many of their own ideas. They’ve made the acclaimed Metroid Prime games, developed two Donkey Kong Country titles and helped with Mario Kart 7, but the company doesn’t really have any series to call their own.
But it seems like this might be changing! Indeed, according to recent rumours going around, Retro’s next game is apparently a new IP and its coming to the Nintendo NX in 2017.
Here are some tweets about the rumour, from well known video game industry ‘insider’ Emily Rogers:
Rumor part 2: Not Diddy Kong Racing 2 either. It sounds more like a new IP.

So what it is? Well to be honest, it’s hard to say. Based on what Retro were doing before Metroid Prime became a thing, some people think it might have something to do with the cancelled Raven Blade RPG. Others believe it might be an attempt by Nintendo to compete in the Western FPS market, a more realistic online shooter to go alongside Splatoon in Nintendo’s library. But those are just what a couple of people on forums and social media think, and are based on nothing more than speculation.
Regardless of the game in question though, is the rumour real?
Well, that’s hard to tell at this point. It’s pretty clear Retro Studios is working on something, and even more obvious that any new game would have to be for the Nintendo NX. It’s also quite clear by now that the staff there are interested in making something new rather than a revival of an existing Nintendo franchise. So the new IP possibility certainly checks out. And the 2017 release? Seems plausible, the company has generally released games two or three years apart (Tropical Freeze was early 2014).
So it’s plausible, but not confirmed by any means.
Still, what do you think about this rumour and the possibility of Retro Studios’ new game being an original IP?
